Mahekal Beach Resort, Playa del Carmen

Tis’ the season we all start feeling like we need to escape the cold and head over to a tropical destination.  I know I’m already itching for a nice tan and warmer weather.  We love the Caribbean and I personally love going to Mexico. I’ve been there four times!  This time around, I visited Mexico with my family including my son. We were craving a landing at an all-white sand beach with clear blue/green water… and we didn’t want to take a long flight in order to arrive there. So we booked a flight to Playa del Carmen, Mejico! We actually first arrived at Cancun’s airport and then we had about an hour drive to the resort.

I had to do my homework to see if the area was safe to bring my boy. I also wanted to go to a place that felt more authentic to what Mexico has to offer. After a lot of research we decided to book a Palapa at Mahekal Beach Resort. I have to say we felt very safe in the Resort and around town. The rooms are beautiful and we had a small private plunge pool to ourselves. The hospitality was great and George particularly took great care of us. They have 3 pools and the beach which we alternated around for 7 days. We spent a day doing some arts and crafts with my son Leo, where we painted ceramic pieces made by the locals. I wouldn’t suggest this place, if you are looking for a resort that offers tons of children activities. It’s an ideal destination when you’re looking to relax and sun bathe. Leo swam in the private pool all day and I’d relax in the hammock in our porch with ocean-front views. I prefer less activities, like this we spend more quality time with our boy and as a family. Leo did go jet-skiing with his daddy one day. The beach had a lot of seaweed but unfortunately there’s not much they can do about that since its where sea turtles lay their eggs 😀

If you like trying local food make sure you leave the resort and hit 5th avenue for some street tacos.  Options were really endless.  In the hotel they have 4 restaurants with fresh and delicious food. We opted for the breakfast & lunch/dinner package. We sort of played it by ear.. some days we did breakfast and lunch and others we did breakfast and dinner in the resort. This gave us the perfect excuse to leave the resort everyday. We stayed in for dinner a few nights and we even had a mariachi band perform for us one night.

The grounds are pristine to say the least… just bring a large hat and some mosquito repellant because you’ll need it when walking around the resort. We initially considered Tulum but most of the hotels there are adults only.  I’d absolutely recommend this resort to the next family looking to go to Mexico. We love the people, the culture and the food.  Remember to visit the ruins in Tulum too!
